The Witch of Konotop
A classic satirical novella (1833) about the Cossack captain Zabriokha and the clerk Pistriak, who hunt for a "witch" in Cossack Konotop to explain a drought, and drown suspected women in a pond. Kvitka-Osnovianenko mocks superstition, stupidity and abuse of power with humor and a sharp eye, while lovingly depicting Ukrainian everyday life and the language of the 18th century. This very work became the basis of a modern graphic novel that turned into a bestseller and brought the classic back to young readers.
Who should read it: those who love Ukrainian humor and satire; readers who want to discover the classics in an easy and fun way; admirers of colorful vernacular language and everyone interested in the popular graphic novel based on this work.
