Ukrainian International Ballet — INdependent24

🎭 INdependent24 is an evening of contemporary choreography in which Ukrainian artists speak about themselves in the language of the body: about who you are when you have had to leave home, and what movement can do when the usual limits no longer apply. Ukrainian International Ballet grew out of the Ukrainian dance community in the Netherlands and combines classical ballet training with contemporary choreography.

The programme features two works:

• Emotions by choreographer Dmytro Borodai. It is based on the story of the veteran Andrii Siromakha, who lost an arm and a leg in the war and takes the stage himself. His presence turns the performance into an honest exploration of resilience, physical limits, and what a dancer's body can be
• de/het/één by Rishel Viles. Here ten Ukrainian dancers share their experience of a new life in the Netherlands: everyday observations and humour alongside stories about a lost home and the search for one's place in an unfamiliar society

🎶 The soundscape of the second piece is made up of recorded interviews with the participants and music by the Ukrainian composer Yurii Shepeta. Good to know in advance: this is not a classical narrative ballet, but contemporary choreography built on movement and personal testimonies.
