Carmina Burana — National Opera and Ballet of Ukraine, Odesa

🎶 Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is recognisable from the very first bars, even if you have never heard it in full. The Odesa National Opera and Ballet brings a staged version of the cantata to Hengelo, with over a hundred performers on stage: orchestra, choir, soloists and ballet.

The texts of the cantata are medieval poems about capricious fate, love, desire and the uncertainty of life. The famous O Fortuna opens and closes the performance, and in between come loud celebrations, quiet lyrical scenes and a reminder that happiness and power pass as suddenly as they arrive.

Dance and projections are combined with live music, so the evening will appeal both to lovers of choral and symphonic music and to those who go to the theatre for the ballet.

📚 One hour before the start, Gerard Mosterd will give an introductory lecture. It costs €2.50, and is free for friends of the theatre. It must be booked separately from the ticket.
